Who Is The Holy Spirit?
By Jaleia Christine
Have you ever caught yourself saying, “a voice in my head…” or, “something is telling me to…” ?
If you have, chances are, you were hearing from the Holy Spirit.
A lot of times, us Christians allow fear and/or worry stop us from acknowledging and obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:19 it says, “Do not quench the Spirit.” (NKJV)
Another translation says, “Do not quench [subdue, or be unresponsive to the working and guidance of] the [Holy] Spirit.” (AMP)
I think one of the problems is that we don’t fully understand the who the Holy Spirit is and what His purpose is. As a solution, I’m going to teach you guys a little bit today about who He is and what He does.
The Holy Spirit is God.
He is a part of the Holy Trinity— which consists of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not on a “take him or leave him” basis. You don’t get to choose. Either you have the Spirit and are a believer or you don’t have the Spirit and are a nonbeliever.
When Jesus died on the cross and then raised from the dead, Jesus told His disciples that God would send them the Holy Spirit to help them after He left.
John 14:26 says, “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” ( NLT)
As John 14:26 says,
The Holy Spirit teaches us, and
The Holy Spirit reminds us.
The only reason we have the Gospels ( Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John) is because the disciples spent time with Jesus while He was on Earth and then the Holy Spirit reminded them of everything Jesus said after He left.
The same thing applies to us in this century in the year of 2021. The Holy Spirit will remind us of everything Jesus said too. But the only way for Him to RE-mind us is if it’s already in our mind. “It” as in the word of God. We MUST read the bible every. single. day. If you don’t, you’re giving the enemy an open door in your life.
We can’t be part-time Christians with a full-time enemy.
The only reason I have a healthy, loving, and committed relationship with the Holy Spirit is because I am devoted to reading the word and spending time with Him. You could (and already should) have a relationship with the Holy Spirit if you have already given your life to Jesus. But you must spend time reading your bible to get to know Him better.
Tim Ross said so clearly in his book,
“Some people like to think that when Jesus was on earth He was like Superman and flew around the world saving people. The truth is, He couldn’t do anything in His earthly ministry without depending on the same person He’s telling us to depend on.”
When Jesus was performing all of the miracles, signs, and wonders that are talked about in the bible, He was relying on the Holy Spirit. If Jesus, The Son of GOD, needed the Holy Spirit, don’t you think you need him too?
The last thing I want to touch on today is conviction.
The Holy Spirit convicts’ people of sin.
The only reason my life changed from being a worldly, smoking, drinking, party-girl to a devoted Christian woman was because the Holy Spirit convicted me of the life I was living. It was sinful and unholy, but God desired for me to live a life of purity. So, He told His Spirit to convict my heart.
I was talking to my roommate the other day and was telling her how God convicting us of our sins is the most loving thing He could do for us.
Think about it like this. If you had just finished eating a salad with a whole bunch of green spinach and it was stuck all in your teeth, but you had no idea, wouldn’t you want one of your friends to be like , “hey, you got a little something there”? Or would you rather them let you walk around looking a mess and embarrass yourself?
As uncomfortable as it sounds, I would rather my friend tell me there’s something in my teeth rather than a stranger – to save myself the embarrassment. In the same way, The Holy Spirit is here to tell us about ourselves so that we don’t go out into the world being un-self-aware.
God loves you enough to say,
“Hey, you’ve got a little pride right there; come to ME and I’ll fix it” so that you don’t go out and hurt others (and yourself) by your prideful behavior. Or, “Hey, you’ve got a little insecurity right there, let ME heal you.” The way that God speaks these things is through the Holy Spirit.
But if you can’t hear and understand the Holy Spirit, then you will not experience these character developing convictions.
Enduring conviction from the Holy Spirit isn’t the most enjoyable in the moment but it is the root of all transformation. Conviction is how I went from being a promiscuous, prideful, and selfish girl to a God-fearing, devoted, and loving woman of God.
As a Christian, you NEED conviction in order to avoid complacency and stagnation in your spiritual life and character.
Just to recap:
The Holy Spirit teaches,
The Holy Spirit reminds, and
The Holy Spirit convicts.
As you can see, the Holy Spirit is a very vital component to our relationship with Jesus Christ.
If you didn’t get anything else from this post, what I want you to remember above all else is to spend time reading the bible. Your relationship with the Holy Spirit will flourish when you do.
